The brief
A shop with two air conditioners, three display fridges and heavy window lighting, fed from a small board with no door. The terminals were green with oxidation, one breaker showed signs of melting, and on hot summer days the shop had lost power several times. Almost all the load sat on one phase.
How it was done
- 01 Current on each phase measured at peak hours and a list of real loads drawn up
- 02 New board in a closed IP55 enclosure, mounted away from the entrance and out of the way of moisture
- 03 Load spread across three phases, with separate circuits for each air conditioner, the fridges, lighting and the till
- 04 RCD protection on socket circuits and a Type 2 surge protective device at the incomer
- 05 Damaged conductors cut back to sound copper, and every termination torqued to specification
- 06 Circuits labelled and a single-line diagram handed to the owner
The outcome
The three phases are balanced, and the following summer brought no outages from the board. A fault on one circuit no longer switches off the fridges. The closed enclosure keeps the salt air off the terminals.
