The brief
A four-storey building with an audio intercom whose door panel crackled and sometimes went dead entirely in wet weather. The residents wanted video, but would not have the freshly painted stairwell broken out for new cable.
How it was done
- 01 Existing cable on each floor tested for insulation and continuity
- 02 Two-wire system chosen so the sound cable could be reused unchanged
- 03 Cable on two damp-damaged floors replaced, pulled through the existing conduit
- 04 Door panel fitted with a hood and a proper weather rating, and the cable entry sealed
- 05 Central power supply installed in a locked enclosure with the door lock wired to it
- 06 Picture, audio and door release tested from every flat with residents present
The outcome
All eight flats have clear picture and audio, and the stairwell walls were left untouched. The door panel has worked without fault through the rainy season since installation.
